Capsula are a rock band from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Their name is the Spanish word for capsule and derives from the David Bowie song "Space Oddity".
Influenced as much by 1960s South American psychedelic rock as by garage, they started in Argentina recording three albums: Sublime (1999), Yudoka (2000) and a recording of experimental rarities named Ultimo Fragmento (2000)
They start touring in Europe in 1998 and moved to Bilbao in 2001, city where all the members of the band live since then. In 2002 they publish Capsula with songs in Spanish and their first songs in English. For writing in English they use Surrealist automatism and Cut-up technique, picking phrases from rock & roll songs, Dylan Thomas' poems, movies, newspapers and dreams they have during the recording sessions.
The next following years from 2003 to 2005 they tour Europe and publish several CD singles, until they record Songs & Circuits, in 2006, with a Madrid-based label Discos Liliput. The album was released January 16, 2007 described them as "garage rock for the 21st Century" reminiscent of The Stooges and The Velvet Underground.
Described as live animals on stage by the press, their mix of raw noise with sonic sounds results in an exciting live act.
In 2007 and 2008, Capsula tour USA, UK, Canada, Europe & Southamerica receiving rave reviews of their live gigs.
In October 2008 Capsula signed with BCore Disc, releasing 'Rising Mountains' in April 2009.
The album 'Rising Mountains' and Capsula show in SXSW 2009 were chosen by David Fricke as one of the best surprises of the festival. He wrote in his column Fricke's Picks for the Rolling Stone Magazine in April 2009:
’It was only 9 p.m. on opening night when I hit my first pay dirt of this year’s SXSW in Austin: Capsula a kinetic trio from Bilbao, Spain — singer-guitarist Martin Guevara and bassist Coni Duchess, the band’s founding couple, are originally from Argentina — who were supposed to be obsessed with the Velvet Underground (according to a newspaper preview) but were actually a high-velocity union of the Cramps and the Who, coated in corroded glam. Guevara attacked his guitar with a serious case of Pete Townshend, and drummer Alberto Diez was an improbable mix of Keith Moon and the Velvets’ Maureen Tucker: flash with heartbeat. In the last song of the set, a furious space-out that sounded like the Who doing Pink Floyd’s “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun,” Guevara swallowed his mike Lux Interior-style and scraped his guitar strings along the edge of the stage. You don’t get those visuals with Capsula’s new album, Rising Mountains (BCore), but you get the idea — and everything I heard.’ David Fricke. Fricke’s Picks. (Rolling Stone).
In July 2009 Capsula recorded a new album, collaborating with New York rock legend Ivan Julian (Richard Hell & The Voidoids), titled Ivan Julian & Capsula - The Naked Flame and released in Spain by Bloody Hotsak.
In 2011 they publish 'In The Land of Silver Souls' (Krian Music Group/BCore) produced by John Agnello.
In 2012 Capsula record one of their favourite albums of all times: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars, of David Bowie. Learning from their master, the band transform a classic into entirely new creation. The reason they do the album is because the three member of the band could not stop dreaming with David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust. They title the album Dreaming of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust.
In 2013 the band will present a new collection of songs under the name Solar Secrets, to be recorded in Lexington with producer Tony Visconti, fresh from working on The Next Day, David Bowie’s first studio album in a decade. Extremely vocal in regards to their unwavering appreciation and admiration for David Bowie and his music catalogue, Capsula are thrilled for the chance to work with Visconti, and the feeling is mutual. ”Capsula is a serious rock trio, possessed of great musicianship with songs destined to be evergreens,” remarked Tony Visconti. “I can’t wait until our studio odyssey begins.”
With Visconti at the helm, Capsula will experiment with a variety of sonic influences. Fans will recognize the trio’s signature sound of blazing rock n’ roll riffs, heart pounding drumbeats, and catchy vocal melodies.
